Consultant in Anaesthetics and Intensive Care Medicine
Craigavon Area Hospital
About me:
I have been a Consultant in the NHS since 2000. Between February 2000 and July 2005 I worked at Antrim Area Hospital including 3 years as Lead Consultant for Intensive Care Medicine. In July 2005 I travelled across the Atlantic to take up post as Assistant Professor in the Departments of Medicine (Critical Care) and Anesthesia at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. I worked there full-time until September 2006 when I returned to the UK to my curent post in Craigavon Area Hospital. During my time in Halifax I was Chair of the Multidisciplinary Critical Care Quality Assurance and Quality Improvement Committee, and also active in setting up a web-based hub supporting resident education in the ICU. From October 2006 through to June 2010 I maintained a part-time position in Halifax, commuting across the Atlantic 4-6 weeks per year, while also undertaking some administrative and web-related work for the department. I have now moved to full-time work solely in the UK, mainly in critical (intensive) care although I also have anaesthesia duties. My particular interests include in infectious diseases in critical care, acute kidney injury, quality improvement, and medical education.
I have a Masters in Education and currently I am the Royal College of Anaesthetists College Tutor in Craigavon Area Hospital and Educational Supervisor for 16 trainees (residents). I also became involved with the UK Postgraduate Medical Education and Training Board (now merged with the General Medical Council) as a partner (visitor) helping to QA education delivery. I am interested in the role of technology in enhancing education and have authored a number of modules for the E-learning for Healthcare program in the UK (E-Learning Anaesthesia component).
Until late 2009 I was a member of the UK National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Health Technology Assessment Program's Interventional Procedures Panel. I maintain my interest in promoting appropriate funding for research in clinical interventions as an expert advisor to the Interventional Procedures Panel and am an Honorary NIHR Faculty Member.
